WELCOME TO YEAR 3

Autumn Term
In the Autumn Term, we kick off our fabulous learning journey looking back into Ancient Rome and Pompeii, reading 'Escape from Pompeii'. In History, we will continue to learn about the Roman Empire and how the Romans came to Britain. The Science topic will focus on rocks and soil, where we will be investigating the different types of rocks and how they are formed. We will also learn about the formation of soil, exploring the soil on our own school grounds. In Geography we will be learning all about volcanoes and earthquakes.
In the second half of the Autumn term, the English text will be, 'The Firework Maker’s Daughter 'which takes us into the cultural depths of Asia. This will lead us in to some learning in Geography about how our world is divided into different continents and countries and then looking in depth at one of the countries in Asia.
Spring Term
To begin the Spring Term, our main text is 'The Iron Man' - another classic text. In our English lessons children will be writing reports and poems linked to this text. In Art, we will be be studying the artist Michelle Reader who specialises in sculptures; there will be a big focus on the importance of recycling. In Computing, we will be learning how to use a programme called Scratch. In our Science lessons, we will be learning all about magnets and how they are used in everyday resources.
In the second half of the Spring Term, our main text is 'Stig of the Dump'. In our English lessons, we will write a description of the setting through the eyes of one of the main characters as well as learn all about writing persuasive letters. In DT we are going to be making and designing a healthy pizza topping. Our History lessons are all about The Stone Age and how the way in which we lived has changed.
Summer Term
To end their time in Year 3, we have a fantastic Summer Term planned for the children. We will start our English lessons , focusing on the book 'Treasure Island'. We will be writing our own adventure story sections based on aspects of Treasure Island. In Geography, we are learning all about coastlines to create a greater understanding of them, we will be going on a trip to Chichester Marina and Bosham Harbor. For the whole of the Summer Term, Year 3 will be learning to swim as part of their PE lessons at the Arun Leisure Centre pool.
Other Information
PE days are Monday and Tuesday so please send your child into school wearing their PE kits on those days.
It is, of course, vital that you hear your child read as often as possible. We ask the children to read at home at least five times a week and that you record this in their reading diaries.
The children also receive spellings (to be tested on a Friday) and Timestables homework (via TTRS) every week.
Finally, the children will receive ‘Home Learning Journal’ homework which is usually topic based. This is an opportunity for the children to show their creativity and have more ownership of their learning.
We hope the children really enjoy Year 5. Please book an appointment via the office to talk to your child’s teacher if you have any queries or questions.
